What Is a Rebate?
A rebate is money that may be returned to the homeowner after installing qualifying energyefficient equipment, such as a heat pump HVAC system or heat pump water heater.
Rebates are usually offered by utility companies or energy-efficiency programs to help lower the final cost of upgrading old equipment.
Rebate amounts depend on your location, utility provider, available funding, and the time of installation. Rebate programs can change at any time.
Rebates are not automatic or guaranteed. The equipment, installation, and paperwork must meet the program requirements before the rebate can be approved.
How VM Heating & Cooling Services Helps
VM Heating & Cooling Services works with different rebate programs for qualifying HVAC and water heater upgrades.
We help homeowners understand available rebate options, choose qualifying equipment, and complete electrification projects properly. This includes replacing old gas equipment with highefficiency electric heat pump systems when it makes sense for the home.
Our goal is to make the process clear, code-compliant, and done correctly from the beginning, including proper equipment selection, installation, permits, and rebate requirements.
rebate process
1. Initial consultation
We start by reviewing your project, your existing equipment, your home setup, and your utility provider.
2. Rebate eligibility check
We check which rebate programs may be available based on your location, utility provider, equipment type, and current program requirements.
3. Equipment selection
We help you choose equipment that fits your home and may qualify for available rebates, such as a heat pump HVAC system or heat pump water heater.
4. Estimate and project approval
We provide an estimate showing the project scope, equipment options, and estimated rebate amount if applicable.
5. Rebate reservation when required
Some rebate programs require funds to be reserved before the project starts. When required, we help with this step before installation begins.
6. Permit and installation
We complete the installation properly, following code requirements, manufacturer specifications, and rebate program rules.
7. Required documents and signatures
After installation, the required rebate documents are completed. This may include invoices, equipment information, photos, permit information, and homeowner signatures.
8. Inspection when required
If a permit or inspection is required, the project must pass inspection before the rebate can be fully completed.
9. Rebate Submission
The rebate paperwork is submitted to the proper program for review
10. Rebate approval and payment
Once the rebate program reviews and approves the project, the rebate is released according to that program’s process.
There are usually two ways the rebate may be handled:
We work seamlessly with top local and state programs to ensure you get the maximum allowable rebates. We handle the paperwork so you don't have to.
Instant discount:
The contractor receives the rebate directly, and the rebate amount is applied toward the project price. This lowers the client’s out-of-pocket cost.
Homeowner reimbursement
The homeowner pays the full project amount, and after approval, the rebate is paid directly to the homeowner.
The available option depends on the rebate program, utility provider, contractor participation, and program requirements.
Important note: Rebates are not guaranteed until approved by the rebate program. Rebate amounts, requirements, and funding can change at any time.
How Much Can Rebates Cover?
In the Greater Sacramento area and some surrounding areas, homeowners may be eligible for approximately $3,000–$4,000 in rebates for a gas-to-electric heat pump water heater conversion. For HVAC upgrades, homeowners may also be eligible for approximately $2,000– $3,000 in rebates when replacing a gas heating system with a qualifying electric heat pump HVAC system. Rebate availability and amounts depend on the homeowner’s location, utility provider, equipment selected, program funding, and approval requirements. Rebate programs can change at any time and are not guaranteed until approved.
Some rebate programs may be combined or stacked together, which can increase the total rebate amount and lower the homeowner’s out-of-pocket cost.
Equity-based rebate programs may also offer higher rebate amounts for qualifying households, depending on income eligibility, location, program funding, and current program requirements.
Heat pump upgrades can help improve comfort, increase efficiency, and reduce natural gas usage. In some areas, qualifying homeowners may be eligible for rebates that help lower the final project cost.
